Education for UK medical students
Mr Achan runs a four week Special Study Module at Barts and the London for students in their final year.
Subject area: Musculoskeletal disease & Orthopaedics of the Hip, Knee and Trauma.
Aims: To educate the applicant in the essentials of musculoskeletal disease, focussing on the hip, knee and trauma. To enhance their skills in clinical diagnosis, examination and decision making. To work in a multidisciplinary unit dealing with trauma victims.
To enhance their basic surgical skills including workshops for suturing, arthroscopic work and enhanced visuo-spatial awareness correlated with surface markings
To learn the basic skills of audio visual presentation using powerpoint and keynote, interview skills as well as strategic planning for career progression.

Outline of module:
This module is based in the department of orthopaedics and trauma. The applicant will enhance skills in basic clinical evaluation of common musculoskeletal conditions that a doctor would encounter in the emergency setting, in community health or in a specialised orthopaedic department. The applicant will learn how to develop and prepare a good powerpoint or keynote presentation. Then be given the opportunity to deliver such a presentation in front of a critical audience. This is a skill that is often not taught well but crucial in various stages of a doctor’s career. The applicant will be asked to develop a career plan to appreciate the current competetive environment and see how best to prepare for this.
